GBK Southampton Launch Night

Ever since I tried GBK, or Gourmet Burger Kitchen, for the first time in Guildford while I was at university, I’ve been desperate for one to open in Southampton. I’d had a fabulous evening with some of my university friends, and wanted to go back for more. And now, finally, my burger prayers have been answered. Adding to the numerous new restaurants opening at Guildhall Square, GBK held its press night last week as it prepared to open, and I was lucky enough to be invited along*.

AnnaJess and myself had a little mooch around John Lewis beauty hall, and then headed up to the new GBK ready for a burger feast. We were greeted by the lovely staff, who were so welcoming and attentive, and were quickly shown to our table. The restaurant is a large room with high ceilings, but decorated in such a manner that it feels relaxed, cosy, and still airy and spacious. Seated in a booth, we had plenty of room, but we could easily giggle and gossip the evening away. Once we’d taken in our surroundings, our minds turned to food and we were not disappointed.

The menu was just as varied as I remembered, with something for everyone. As the name of the restaurant might suggest, burgers are the main focus of the menu, ranging from Classic, to more extravagant toppings, chicken and vegetarian. You have the option to add extras to your burger, like cheese and bacon, and there’s a variety of sides and dipping sauces. If anything, there could be too much choice – it took us all a while to decide what we wanted. You can view the menu here.

In the end, we got some Grilled Halloumi (a discovery I made at Guildford’s GBK), and the Chargrilled Chicken Skewers – which Anna loved! For burgers, I chose the Classic Cheese Burger, with no sides as I remembered how filling GBK’s burgers could be. Jess and Anna chose Skinny Fries and Sweet Potato Fries respectively, and I may have cheekily pinched one or two. We all had Oreo milkshakes, which were delicious. What better dinner than burgers and milkshakes?

All in all, I had a great time, with good food and some lovely company. The atmosphere was so chilled, the food was delicious, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I can see GBK becoming a regular choice for girly dinners – I can’t wait to head back and try something else on the menu!
