Bobbi Brown Retouching Face Pencils

You might have realised by now that I'm a big fan of Bobbi Brown makeup. Some of my first high-end purchases were Bobbi Brown items, and I am always looking for new products to try. An exciting release from the brand this month are the Retouching Face Pencils. I'd seen them online, and I'd become obsessed with watching BB Pro Artist Hannah (find her on Instagram here) posting about them. So, when the bestie Ash told me our local counter had them and that I would love them, I headed into town for a swatch... and a spend.

Billed as Bobbi Brown's "secret to a retouched yet natural look", I was highly anticipating having the chance to have a look at these Retouching Pencils. I love my Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation, so I leapt at the chance to try more base products. The pencils are a creamy matte formula, with a range of colours to help you lighten shadows, tackle dark areas, and neutralise redness - what more could you ask for? Tackling specific areas that need work has become popular, and I think these pencils will make the job even easier. There's also a highlight shade to accentuate the high points of the face, my favourite thing.

After a bit of swatching, and the lovely assistant at John Lewis Southampton applying some to my face to show me how they work, I opted for the Illuminate pencil, for highlighting, and the Light pencil, for concealing and lightening my undereye area. I can tell that the Illuminate pencil will become a swift favourite for highlighting my brow bone, cheekbone, nose and Cupid's Bow.

I quite quickly fell in love with the consistency of these pencils. They both glide onto the skin easily and blend beautifully to give extra coverage but with a skin-like finish. I use the Light pencil under my eyes to help hide those dreaded under eye circles and find that it works well with my usual concealer and powder. I was a little worried that it might look a little too cakey, but it blends so nicely that all of my base products just become one in a way.

The Illuminate pencil is already a firm favourite. I love to apply it to the tops of my cheekbones, my brow bone, and my Cupid's Bow after I have finished my foundation to give that first highlight layer. When I finish my makeup, I add a powder highlight on top. Using the Illuminate pencil as a base really makes my highlight pop, something I am all for. I also like the fact that these pencils can be used to touch up my makeup throughout the day. I often find that my highlight disappears by the afternoon, so it's nice to know that I can just whip out a pencil and top it up. Brilliant idea.

I think these pencils are a really good idea. They're slimline so they're great for travelling, and can easily be thrown into your bag for on-the-go touch ups. I'm surprised by how creamy these are (I expected pencils to be quite drying), so I would definitely recommend at least giving them a swatch - you might be surprised. I've seen a few people bronzing the skin with these too - maybe that'll be my next investigation.

Have you tried the Bobbi Brown Retouching Face Pencils yet? Do you have a favourite?

Love Lexie
