Billy Elliot The Musical - Mayflower Theatre

Look who's back?!

Teacher training has taken over my life a little bit (don't get me wrong, I'm loving it and I'll maybe do an update post on it soon, but there's a lot of work involved), and that's meant that blogging (something else I love) has fallen by the wayside a little bit. But I recently took my teaching hat off and headed down to The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton with the usual blogging crew to watch Billy Elliot*. Spoiler alert, I LOVED it!!!

I love going to the theatre, but don't get to go anywhere near as often as I would like, so when the opportunity to see Billy Elliot was offered, I had to take it! I'd never seen the film (I know, shock horror!) so I had no preconceived ideas about what to expect, except that it was about a young boy and his love for ballet.

I loved the story line, and found the historical references to the mine strikes during Maggie Thatcher's time as prime minister really interesting - I've always heard stories about the strikes of the 80s, but didn't really know much about it. It was really fascinating to hear about how long the strikes were lasting and the effects it had on the miners' families.

The highlight of the show for me had to be the dancing. I am a huge ballet fan, and finally got to see a ballet a couple of years ago for my 21st birthday, so having that incorporated into the show was incredible. The talent of the cast, especially the kids was amazing! For our performance, we had Emile Gooding as our Billy. He was spectacular, completely took my breath away. He was so cute, but pulled off the one-liners so convincingly, and his dancing was top-notch. Basically, he was just my favourite and I could have watched him dance all night. The amount of talent in the whole cast is awe-inspiring - I wish I'd kept up ballet dancing now, who knows where I could've been?!

The songs were just as touching as the dancing, and the production as a whole had me laughing, crying and everything in between. It's really one to give you all the feels! I'll be honest, I didn't think I would love Billy Elliot as much as I did, but I'm sure from my Instagram you'll have noticed that I was loving it. Plus, my friends can all tell you how much I was raving about it!

I had the best time at The Mayflower Theatre, a massive thank you to everyone there, the SotonBloggers and of course the cast and crew of Billy Elliot for giving me the opportunity to watch the show. It was utterly breath-taking and I loved every single minute of it!

Love Lexie,
xo
