Another month, another new show arrives at the
Mayflower Theatre in
Southampton. This month, it's the turn of
Miss Saigon - an absolute classic when it comes to theatre and one that has been on my to-watch list for many a year. And when it comes to your hometown, how can you refuse?
Cameron Mackintosh's production of the classic
Miss Saigon has been highly acclaimed, during its stints in the West End and on Broadway, and it's now on the road. It's in Southampton until the 17th March and then its on to even more places across the country - you can check all the dates
here.
Based around the last days of the Vietnam War, Miss Saigon follows young woman Kim and her romance with American GI Chris. Their romance is not destined to be easy - I mean, when are they ever - due to the fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War. I am big fan of history, especially in a fictionalised or dramatised way like this. It's a hard hitting storyline, that really tugs at your heartstrings. I'll be honest, I ended up in tears come the end of the show - I haven't seen a theatre show that's had that effect on me in a long time.
The stage set really builds the ambience for the performance - it totally exudes drama. I mean it's not everyday that a helicopter is flown on stage! The cast were all fabulous. The singing and the choreography were of an incredible level, and it totally sucks you in. I spent the whole time totally mesmerised!
Joreen Bautista as
Kim and
Ashley Gilmour as
Chris were fabulous. Their onstage chemistry was really believable, and they helped make the story really convincing. It was that convincing chemistry that pulled me in and made me so invested in their story - no wonder the ending had me sobbing. The absolute star of the show for me though had to be the little boy, Tam. What an absolute cutie - and he definitely got the biggest round of applause at the end!
I am definitely loving seeing more of the classic musicals that you hear about. There's something to be said about immersing yourself completely in a story for a couple of hours and watching an incredible cast and crew perform. And
Miss Saigon did not disappoint! I think I can quite easily say it is my favourite theatre production I've seen so far.
If you fancy watching
Miss Saigon, you can book tickets via the
Mayflower website or call their Box Office on 02380 711811.

*I was lucky enough to be invited to watch Miss Saigon on press night in return for a blog review. However, all views are honest and my own.
