2018 Beauty Favourites

One of my favourite things about coming to the end of a year is looking back at the makeup I've used throughout the year and compiling a list of my absolute favourites. This year, I've done my fair share of hunting out some new beauty bits and rediscovering some of those forgotten things that somehow found their way to the bottom of my makeup bag.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation - Shade 3.5
This was a product I first tried right when it very first came out. I had a sample of it after a visit to the counter in Selfridges, but never got around to buying a full size. When Charlotte Tilbury finally launched in West Quay in Southampton, I was so excited, and when I was in need of a new foundation, I knew exactly what I was going to buy. It's long-lasting, demi-matte foundation, which I adore - I can be quite oily, so matte foundation is always my friend but at the same time I live for that glow. I think it's fair to say that I'm quite the conundrum, but Magic Foundation might be the answer to all my makeup prayers - it's amazing!

Too Faced Love Light Highlighter - Blinded by the Light
I've been an avid lover of my Becca X Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop since I managed to get my hands on it, but sadly it's slowly but surely it's getting down to pan so I thought it was time to branch out. During a trip to London in the summer, I stumbled across a Too Faced counter in Debenhams and started swatching their highlighters. The Love Light Highlighters were all gorgeous but I settled for Blinded by the Light. It's a pearly highlighter, that is cooler and more pink toned than Champagne Pop - one I've found so wearable this Autumn/Winter. It's so pretty, and buildable, but wearable for everyday too - win win!

Obsession Makeup London Matte Fix Setting Spray
As I've said, I can have incredible oily skin, which can make my makeup melt off - especially in the hot summer days like we had this year. That means that for me, a setting spray is essential. I've never been particularly loyal to a brand, but this one from Obsession works really well. It helps keep me oil-free, without taking away that glow I work so hard to get on my face.

Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude palette - Bronze
This product was one of my most anticipated releases of the year - I could have easily purchased both shades of this palette. In the end, I opted for the Bronze edition of this palette, thinking that I'd get the most use out of it... and I was right! This easily became one of my everyday staples, I reach for it all the time. I'm a huge bronze eye fan and this delivers everything you could ever want. Fancy something simple? This palette has you covered. Something super sparkly? This palette can do that. Going full on smokey? This palette has everything you need. Another absolute smash hit from Bobbi Brown - I have a full review of the palette which you can read here.

Kylie Cosmetics Strawberry Cream Velvet Lip Kit
I've been a fan of Kylie Cosmetics since Kylie first launched her first lip kits and I still love them now. This year, I branched away from the classic matte lip and tried one of her Velvet kits - Strawberry Cream. The colour is a gorgeous bright pink, that I find surprisingly wearable on a day-to-day basis, and the formula is slightly creamier and more comfortable to wear than the matte lip kits. Despite this, Strawberry Cream is still amazingly long wearing, although you do have to be wary of the transfer. I'd definitely be open to buying a couple more in 2019.

Morphe X Jaclyn Hill Bling Boss Palette
Last year it was all about the original Jaclyn Hill palette with Morphe, but this year, she released the Vault Collection, and I knew I had to be involved. After much deliberation, I settled on the Bling Boss palette as my first choice of palette and I have not been disappointed. Being something of a creature of habit, I figured that at 24 it was about time I branched out a little and tried something new. Well you can't get any further from my comfort zone than this gorgeous palette of purple hues. Have I had occasions where I've looked slightly like I've been punched in the face after playing around with the shades? Yes. But I've also managed a purple smokey eye for my Christmas do this year, and I've miraculously created some every day looks with the lighter shades in the palette too. It's been surprisingly versatile. And I've been so impressed by the easily blendable and highly pigmented shades that I asked for the Dark Magic palette for Christmas - keep your eyes peeled for a post on that soon.

Nars Blush - Orgasm
This was a rediscovery in my makeup bag this year. I remember being so excited at purchasing one of my first Nars products, and it being such an iconic one, but sure enough it got lost in the depths of my makeup bag during the move to my new flat. Towards the end of the year, I've dug it out from its hiding place and fallen straight back in love with it. It's that gorgeous pink that gives you a subtle flush (as long as you're not too heavy handed as I have been in the past) and the gold sheen running throughout the blush gives you that glow that I search for on the daily. 10/10.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lip - Pure Hollywood
This is an absolute classic. I have loved this lip product for as long as I can remember - it's just one of those colours that I don't need to think about before I throw it on for work. It's a gorgeous nude that goes with whatever makeup look I've decided to go for that day, and it's long wearing, so I don't need to worry about it wearing off and going patchy before break time. Can it feel slightly dry? Yes, it's a matte liquid lipstick after all, and I am yet to find any that don't feel a little dry. And besides, with the right prep, it's fine. Just remember that lip care beforehand and you're good to go.

L'Oreal Paradise Mascara
If you were here this time last year, you might have noticed that we have a repeat offender on our hands. I fell hard for this mascara last year and it's remained a constant in my makeup stash ever since. I never thought that I would remain so faithful to a mascara but the Paradise mascara really does live up to its name. It's able to add length and volume to my lashes, without looking clumpy, or crumbling off, or transferring. It really is a dream.

Primark X Alex Steinherr Overnight Lip Mask
This goes hand in hand with my comment about good lip care before wearing a matte liquid lipstick. I have struggled this year with sore, chapped lips (I'll admit, I'm my own worst enemy as a nervous lip chewer), so have always had a lip balm or six close by. When I overhauled my skincare collection with the Alex Steinherr collection for Primark (post all about that coming soon), I was thrilled to have a new lip product to try out. And it blew my socks off! I'd never tried an overnight mask before, so didn't have any preconceived ideas, but when I woke up the following morning to the softest lips I had had all year, I was literally jumping for joy. I never imagined that a product at such an affordable price point would be so good, but it is one that I am going to have stocked up in my drawers. If you try anything from this post, make it this lip mask. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Overall, I've had another really good year beauty-wise. It's been full of new discoveries, and falling back in love with old favourites, and that's what I love about these posts looking back at what I've turned to time and time again. What have been some of your favourite products this year? Do you love any of my favourites?

Love Lexie
