Children's Book Haul

As a primary school teacher, I regularly share books with my class. We enjoy reading the classics, particularly Roald Dahl, but I also like to keep on top of new releases for the age group. I've had my eye on a few new titles, but picked a few to add to my to-read pile before lockdown.

Wundersmith - Jessica Townsend
I read the first book in this series last year, following a visit to my school by the author, and loved it. I'd been wanting to continue with this series as soon as I could, but I knew the third book wasn't going to be released until later this year, so I was trying to holdback. However, with lockdown, and the next round of Believathon (a readathon held by Gavin from How To Train Your Gavin) being held next month, I thought now would be the perfect time to pick it up. We follow Morrigan Crow, who is a cursed child, destined to die on the eve of her 11th birthday. However, before that can happen, she is whisked away to the magical Nevermoor by mysterious Jupiter North. Morrigan then has to complete some trials in order to join the Wundrous society, a magic school of sorts. I can't wait to dive back into the magical world of Nevermoor and continue to follow Morrigan's adventures.

Malamander - Thomas Taylor
This book follows Herbert Lemon, who is the Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel in Eerie-On-Sea. He knows that returning lost items to their rightful owners is so important, but is never easy. And this is particularly the case when the lost thing isn't a thing at all, but a person. No one knows what happened to Violet's parents twelve years ago but she engages Herbie to help her find them. The pair soon discover that their disappearance could have something to do with the legendary sea monster the Malamander. A mysterious disappearance and a sea monster? Yes please!

Nevertell - Katharine Orton
The final book I picked up recently was Nevertell, which is a snowy adventure, set in Siberia, full of magic and wonder! We follow the story of Lina, who was born in a Soviet prison camp. She has never seen the world, until one night when she escapes with her best friend Bogdan. Together, they journey across the snowy wilderness, as they are pursued by a vengeful sorceress and her pack of shadow wolves. Lina and Bogdan are going to need all their courage, as well as a sprinkling of magic, in order to survive. How amazing does this sound? I can't wait to get to it!

Have you got any middle grade books that you want to get read soon? What are some of your favourites?
